South Sudan
UNICEF/2020
South Sudan has no electric grid. UNICEF is coordinating for the Government of South Sudan the equipment of the health facilities with solar power throughout the country. This solar power is particularly important for the maintenance of the cold chain. The programme to equip health facilities with solar power for the cold chain started in 2016-2017. In October 2020 UNICEF had equipped more than 700 health facilities equipped solar power, which is appr 50% of the health facilities. The programme is being further rolled-out with the plan to equip another 200 facilities in 2021. The programme is run by UNICEF with funding primarily from GAVI. The main challenges the programme is facing are looting, the weak structure of some health facilities, insecurity in the country and difficult access of certain areas.
